When either a single-sample or multi-sample Variants view is active, you can save a selected group of variants as a “set.” This set appears in its own multi-sample Variants view. You can also directly compare two or more variants sets.

Create a subset of variants:

Task How To
Create a set of variants using a new filter This can be done in either of two ways:

  • From within an existing multi-sample or single-sample Variants view, use Ctrl/Cmd+click or Shift+click to select rows in the table that you wish to put in the set. (You may first wish to click a column header to facilitate grouping variants of interest.) Then choose Variants > Create Set of Variants > With Filter.

  • From the Experiments panel, select experiments you wish to include in the set. Selecting no experiments is the same as selecting all experiments. Right-click on the panel and choose Create Set of Variants.

In both cases, the Create Variant Set wizard opens at the Experiment screen. If you selected a subset of available experiments, these will be checked in the experiment list. See Filter a multi-sample Variants view to learn more about filtering options. After pressing Apply or OK in the wizard, the Variants view for the specified set becomes the active view.
Create a set of variants using the current filter settings From within an existing multi-sample or single-sample Variants view, choose Variants > Create Set of ‘n’ Variant Locations or click the Create variant set tool (). Use Ctrl/Cmd+click or Shift+click to select rows in the table that you wish to put in the set. (You may first wish to click a column header to facilitate grouping variants of interest.) If no rows are currently selected, this command creates a set for all variant locations and is the same as using the menu command Variants > Create Set of Variants.

Work with an existing set of variants:

A variants set is immutable and cannot be added to, subtracted from, or filtered. However, in other ways it acts like any other multi-sample Variants view.

Task How To
Create a new variants set that is a subset of the current set Follow the method in the last row of the table above.
Use tools and menu commands in the view See Compare variants across samples.
Select and organize data columns in the view See Choosing and understanding Variants view columns.
View an existing variants set, delete a set, or edit its name and notes Use the right-click commands in the Variant Sets section of the Explorer panel.
